Biteguard, Mouthguard, Night Guard

Oral Appliances: Mouthguards, Nightguards, Splints, Bite guards, TMJ Guards

What is a bite guard, mouthguard or night guard? Are TMJ guards different?

It is custom-made to protect teeth from wear caused by teeth grinding (bruxism) or teeth clenching using oral appliances, such as bite guards and night guards. A TMJ guard (also known as an orthopedic appliance or an occlusal orthotic) also protects the jaw muscles and jaw joint (TMJ). As well as relieving jaw soreness and joint pain, they can also help prevent jaw lock.

Are bite guards and night guards comfortable?

Answer simply - yes! Today's mouthguards and night guards are custom-made and carefully constructed using lightweight materials designed to be very comfortable while offering advanced protection for your teeth and jaw. All of Dr. Reddy & Dr. Kodali's mouth and night guards are carefully crafted in order to fit securely, provide therapeutic benefits, and provide maximum comfort.

Who should wear a special TMJ guard or occlusal orthotic?

The following people would benefit from wearing a custom-fabricated bite-guard or nightguard

·      People who grind their teeth excessively

·      People with jaw locking or a jaw that gets stuck

·      People with chronic jaw pain, jaw soreness, or jaw stiffness

·      People suffering from TMJ pain (joint pain) related to arthritis of the jaw

·      People who suffer from TMJ related earaches, or TMJ related headaches

Why should I get a professionally-made night guard as opposed to one from the store/online?

Night guards bought in pharmacies, online or at sporting goods stores are typically one-size-fits-all and don’t take into consideration an individual's teeth, bite and jaw positioning. This can lead to discomfort and potential harm, and it is essential that they are monitored by a qualified clinician so as to lessen any risks of long-term shifts in the teeth, bite or jaw.

Will insurance cover the cost of a mouth guard or night guard?

In addition to covering a portion of the cost of an oral appliance, some dental insurance plans will also cover appliances used to protect teeth from bruxism. Please contact your insurance plan administrator directly to find out if your plan offers coverage.
